This easy, do-it-yourself dry shampoo gives hair a lift when you don’t have time to wash.
Save time in the morning by skipping your shampoo and style routine or give your hair a quick, after-work lift with a dry shampoo. Easy to find now at your local drugstore and salon, you can save a few bucks by making your own with cornstarch and a few natural ingredients. International hair artist Mercedes Parrilli of George the salon Chicago, shared these variations to give your hair a boost of color and subtle fragrance. Just work in a pinch of this DIY dry shampoo at roots and shake your head darlings!
Here’s what you need:
- 1/4 cup organic cornstarch
- For brunettes: about 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
- For redheads: about 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- For all hair colors: essential oil of your choice (lavender and rosemary are great for all hair types, sandalwood and geranium are good for dry hair, and lemon and peppermint tame oily hair)
Here’s what you do:
For brunettes, mix cornstarch with cocoa, adding more or less depending on how deep you want the color. For red and auburn hues, follow the same procedure until you achieve the desired color. For blonde, ash and gray hues, mix the corn starch with two to three drops of essential oil. Once mixed, apply with a large cosmetic brush or pour the mixture into a salt shaker and apply to roots. After application, massage into the scalp and restyle. Great for building volume at the crown for high ponytails and buns.
