A couple weeks ago, within a matter of hours, two very dear friends told me that they were each going through something awful in their personal lives. The type of awful experiences you only want to go through once, twice tops. I’ve been through my own something awful and I know this: there is no right thing to say, there is no right thing to do. You give them the space they need and send them warm, healing, loving thoughts and resist the urge to say that you know how they feel – at least that’s all I wanted during my something awful.

A thoughtful gift in these times isn’t a bad idea though. A box of chocolates? Maybe. Depends on the situation but in most cases, chocolate just adds sugar to the wound so to speak. Flowers? Urgh, they’re high maintenance and then they die. A cheesy card that plays a song when you open it? No.

I’m thinking along the lines of a lovely personal expression of your empathy that gives the person license to give themselves a dose of self-love.

Ah, Poetry Bath. Yes.

Poetry Bath Intimate Ritual is the creation of poet and lover of all things serene, Tammy Parker. This inspired line of bath, body and ritual products was crafted with obvious passion, precision and sensitivity. The Poetry experience grew from Parker’s subtle sense of smell and her concern for purity in bath and body products. Her intricate blends of natural essential oils are permeated with a sense of clarity, cleansing and replenishment.

The collection is available in two verses. Verse 1 is an intoxicating citrus fragrance laced with notes of sandalwood and jasmine. Verse 2 is a potent aroma of mint and balsam needle with a hint of grapefruit. Each product was created in the spirit of bringing the spa experience home (you know I love that) complete with soy-based candles, aromatic bath salts, hydrating crèmes and luxurious body oils. A Bathysphere audio and music CD and Italian leather-bound journal round out the thoughtful collection.

Poetry Bath ranges from $20 for petite-sized items to $130 for the Poetry Gift Box (pictured) and is available at poetrybath.com.

Relax for the Cause: Massage for the Cure Returns http://azspagirls.com/blog/relax-for-the-cause-massage-for-the-cure-returns/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/relax-for-the-cause-massage-for-the-cure-returns/#comments Wed, 01 Sep 2010 13:00:00 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=568 Massage Envy

Massage therapy goes much deeper than soothing music and a good ol’ back rub. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), studies show massage can provide stimulation that blocks pain signals sent to the brain and helps release mood-boosting chemicals like serotonin and endorphins. Massage can potentially reduce stress-related symptoms like anxiety and depression and helps ease neck, lower back and even treatment-induced pain and fatigue experienced by chronically ill patients.

But if you still haven’t discovered the benefits yourself, Massage Envy has a way for you to get a massage at an affordable price while supporting a worthy cause. For one day only on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, Massage Envy clinics across the country will take part in the Massage Envy Massage for a Cure benefit. Massage Envy will offer one-hour massage services for just $49 and donate $15 from each to affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Proceeds will benefit breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs in your local community and raise awareness for this devastating disease that effects 1 in 8 Americans. Now in its sixth year, Massage Envy’s Massage for the Cure campaign has raised more than $1.4 million for breast cancer research.

Be a part of the 2010 Massage Envy Massage for the Cure and get a taste of the mind-body benefits of massage while helping to fight breast cancer. Appointments now being accepted. For more information or to find a Massage Envy location near you, call 602-992-ENVY (3689) or visit massageenvy.com.

Perfect Scents: How to Find Happiness in a Bottle http://azspagirls.com/blog/perfect-scents-happiness-in-a-bottle/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/perfect-scents-happiness-in-a-bottle/#comments Fri, 27 Aug 2010 17:20:32 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3961 Salud Spa Bar Perfume

Can happiness be bottled? According to a local fragrance blender, absolutely!

by Lisa Kasanicky

Nothing against Brittany Spears – I’m sure she’s a perfectly nice young lady – but I don’t want to smell like her. And I don’t think I could pull off smelling like Paris Hilton, Queen Latifah or any of the other myriad celebrities who have created their own fragrance lines. Although the thought of a custom scent that says “me” – moody notes laced with a side of hypersensitivity and undertones of a coupon-cutting addiction – is intriguing but I don’t think it would be a big seller.

Enter Kelly Jones Podorsek, founder of Tucson-based Salud Scent Studio. A self-professed scent sommelier and custom fragrance blender, Podorsek says that not only is your choice of fragrance a personal statement but it also can can elevate your mood. Smells have a one-way track to emotional receptors in our brains and given the right notes for your nose, a fragrance can unleash a treasure chest of happy memories.

Here’s her two cents on scents.

Do you think wearing a fragrance contributes to a happier, more positive mood?

Certainly, especially notes in fragrances that remind us of past, happy memories – the smell of playing in a haystack as a child, fresh cut grass, old attics and library books, or the bottle of lilac water on your grandma’s dressing table. Fragrances can bring back those happy memories. Also, certain essential oils and scents can definitely lift the spirit, like neroli, bergamot and other uplifting oranges, as well as the essences of cocoa. Even the very ritual of applying perfume has a calming, centering effect that leads to a happy, peaceful feeling. And of course, I always feel happy when I add a new bottle of perfume to my collection!

In terms of health, are natural essential oil blends better than synthetic fragrances?

There are currently many debates on the very meaning of “natural” and “organic” in the world of perfume. Yes, there is a difference between synthetic scent and essential oil. But I believe that consumers aren’t getting all sides of the story, and that synthetics are not necessarily bad. Essential oils are pure extracts from the plant; I like to think of them as a living liquid in a way. Since these are pure and real, they can have therapeutic and medicinal effects. However, one should also use caution with essential oils, since misuse can sometimes lead to skin irritation. I’m not a fan of the word “synthetic” since it sounds so negative. But in reality, synthetic fragrances are very stable, safe for the skin and allow us to obtain scents that just can’t be capture in the world of essential oils – like the smell of gardenia and pumpkin pie. A high quality perfume will normally contain a combination of essentials and synthetics.

How do we fine-tune our sense of smell?

Leonardo DaVinci once said that the average person “looks without seeing, listens without hearing, touches without feeling, eats without tasting, … and inhales without awareness of odor or fragrance.” My advice is to simply take the time to notice the scents that surround us every day.

Any advice on how to pick the perfect signature scent?

Be open to new scents, and don’t be afraid to try combinations that are very different from what you usually wear. You could be pleasantly surprised! Rest your nose after about five sniffs – smell some coffee beans, or step outside into the fresh air to take a break. Take your time and always try the scents on your skin before committing to a final blend.

How do we extend the wear of our fragrance throughout the day?

Fragrance lasts longer when it’s applied to moisturized skin, so apply some matching or unscented lotion before you apply your perfume. It’s all about layering.

What are your favorite scents?

I tend to get bored with white florals and fruity perfumes. Instead, I love exotic, rare notes and deep, rich woodsy and oriental tones. My current favorite is a blend of Rare Amber, Black Peppercorn, White Tea and Violet. I call it “Zelda” and I blended it after visiting an area on Long Island where F. Scott Fitzgerald set the stage for The Great Gatsby.

Spa Girls Picks for the Best Daily Moisturizers http://azspagirls.com/blog/spa-girls-picks-for-the-best-daily-moisturizers/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/spa-girls-picks-for-the-best-daily-moisturizers/#comments Thu, 26 Aug 2010 18:14:36 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3948 Kinerase Firming Cream

If you been on the hunt for a daily moisturizer that delivers on its promises, we don’t have to tell you that the road is paved with bumps, potholes and a few outright disasters. The beauty aisles are crammed with so many potions and lotions, it can make you dizzy. We know. And even when you do finally discover that miracle cream that jibes with your skin type (Eureka!), your fickle skin can decide for whatever reason to change direction (Sigh.). So we thought we’d share a little bit about our skin and dish on the daily moisturizers that we’re all currently working into our persnickety pores everyday. These are the products that are working for us now but trust us, they could change tomorrow!

Lisa: Head spa girl, dog walker, reader, yogini-wannabe with secret lover of UFC
Skin type: Cranky, crinkly, dry some days, an oil vat on other days
Pick: Kinerase Restructure Firming Cream, $98 at Sephora
Why: “Because I refuse to go down without a fight. The product is pricey (I hope Spa Boy isn’t reading this) so I use it sparingly, massaging it into my forehead, mouth lines and along my jawline. Kindly erase these wrinkles from my face please. Thank you.”

Katie: Greek gal from the Midwest, runner, hiker and spontaneous traveler
Skin type: Combo; dry as Arizona heat after the shower, but not-so-pretty after a long day
Pick: DDF Ultra-Lite Oil-Free Moisturizing Dew SPF 15, $40 at Sephora
Why: “Because it’s so lightweight I feel like I have the moisture and sun protection I need without the greasy feeling of most moisturizers. My skin feels smooth and refreshed after I swipe it on. And at 1.7 oz, the container is light enough to bring in your carry-on.”

Melissa: Candyaholic, crime show-obsessed, avid spinner and soon-to-be wife!
Skin type: Ugh. (is that a type??). Mostly oily in T-zone yet annoyingly dry on the surface
Pick: CosMedix Benefit Balance, $34 at select retailers. I get it through my aesthetician, Denise Hurley Aesthetics.
Why: “It’s seriously light. You mist it onto your face and it settles like water, giving you just enough moisture to make your skin calm down but still feel tight and not oily.”

Chaz: Chazinator, spa boy, thinks in haikus, plays squash, rides bikes, and has to trade treats for hugs from the spa dog
Skin type: Patches of dry, oily, flaky, spotted, clogged pores that seem to migrate around my head throughout the year
Pick: Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream, $15 online
Why: “Spa Girl says it’s wrong for my face, and she’s probably right. But she’s not the boss of me. I love its medicinal smell that fades quickly. It’s thick and creamy but absorbs completely, leaving clean-feeling skin.” More on spa boy’s Yu-Be crush.

Olga: Russian cowgirl, Cali beach bum, secret book worm
Skin type: Unpredictable: Sahara Desert one day, tropical rain forest the next.
Pick: Olay Regenerist Enhancing Lotion with SPF15, $19 at Target and other mass retailers
Why: “It works well with my unpredictable skin type and wards off unwanted wrinkles!”

Alexis: Creative Irish-Greek girl from Pasadena, spinaholic, hot sauce connoisseur, secretly wants to dethrone Martha Stewart as the queen of entertaining
Skin type: Combination
Pick: G.M. Collin Oxygen Active Gel Moisturizer, $45 at select spas
Why: “You’ll never believe it, but I didn’t used to use moisturizer because I thought my skin was oily and didn’t need it. Before my wedding, I was obsessed with having perfect skin and a friend of mine who owns spa in L.A. recommended I check this product out. I’ve been hooked ever since (and my skin hasn’t been this clear in years)!”

Cult Skincare Favorites at Barneys New York http://azspagirls.com/blog/cult-skincare-favorites-at-barneys-new-york/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/cult-skincare-favorites-at-barneys-new-york/#comments Wed, 18 Aug 2010 16:20:51 +0000 melissarzeppa http://azspagirls.com/?p=3697 Malin Goetz

Scottsdale is a hub for some pretty amazing diversions … spas, restaurants, resorts and of course, shopping. We recently popped into Barneys New York at Scottsdale Fashion Square (who can resist!), a boutique department store that has been on our beauty radar since opening in the Valley less than a year ago. As always, the oohs and aaahs were flying high as we perused the beauty counters for the latest in anti-aging products. Sorry wrinkles and lackluster skin, you are no match for products like these! Here’s just a sampling of the cult beauty faves we found.

Malin+Goetz Detox Face Mask, $40

Talk about a quickie at-home facial. All it takes is five minutes to use this foaming gel mask, which promises a serious deep pore cleanse. Oxygenating agents replace harsh detergents and drying clays to lift dirt, oil and makeup away without irritation, while creating a physical barrier to seal hydration. This little wonder leaves skin pure and balanced; plus stable vitamin C, anti-oxidant vitamin E and soy protein help firm skin to protect against aging.

Intelligent Nutrients Intellimune Oil Complex, $45

Defy pre-mature aging with this powerful supplement that aids in fighting free radicals. This product is USDA certified to provide potent anti-oxidants that can help support the immune system. You can choose to actually ingest it with food, or apply it directly to your skin. Two teaspoons of this intelligent oil deliver the antioxidant equivalent of eating 10 pounds of grapes, raspberries or cranberries. Whoa.

3lab Perfect Neck Cream, $120

We lavish our faces with serums and creams but often forget our necks. While it may have taken a few tries to get this product “perfect” according to one Vanity Fair writer , this rich cream does the trick at erasing time from your neck. This formula is hydrating and firming, and contains advanced anti-aging ingredients (including a bio-engineered growth hormone) that will tell wrinkles to take a flying leap.

Dr. Sebagh Serum Repair, $140

While it’s not the sexiest bottle on the shelf, this highly concentrated serum is a serious weapon against lines and wrinkles that works while you sleep. Rumored to be a celebrity secret, the serum boasts a patented formula of micro molecular collagen peptides and uber-hydrating hyaluronic acid to repair and plump wrinkles overnight.

Euoko Y30 Intense Lift Concentrate , $500

We know, we know, it’s pricey! But if you’re looking for a Botox alternative that doesn’t involve a needle, here’s your answer. This super-concentrated serum is laced with rare ingredients that essentially work like a topical Botox to provide instant tightening and plumping of lines and wrinkles. The collagen-enhancing peptides and vitamins encourage long-term plumping while white agaric mushroom extract correct pore size.

Find these hard-to-find, age-defying products at a Barneys New York beauty counter near you or online at barneys.com.

Slip away for summer relief with these exclusive massage deals for greater Phoenix and Scottsdale.

For a recent poll we ran on our Arizona Spa Girls Facebook page, we asked our fans to tell us their favorite spa treatment. Don’t Fake it with Maximize Lash Eyelash Conditioner http://azspagirls.com/blog/dont-fake-it-with-maximize-lash-eyelash-conditioner/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/dont-fake-it-with-maximize-lash-eyelash-conditioner/#comments Fri, 13 Aug 2010 14:11:40 +0000 melissarzeppa http://azspagirls.com/?p=3640 Maximum Lash

I’m always searching for some magical way to make my eyelashes appear longer and fuller, without spending a fortune. Recently, I resorted to wearing false lashes (self-applied) and needless to say, the results were not pretty.

So I tried a new product, Maximum Lash, from the International Cosmetic Associates. It’s pretty cool; it goes on like liquid eye liner across the base of the top lash line, but acts as an eyelash enhancing serum that strengthens lashes naturally. I used it at night before bed every day for one month. It took a few weeks (they say it may take 4-6 weeks) to see any significant change, but after a month my lashes were noticeably longer and stronger. The best part is that the serum didn’t irritate my eyes at all. It’s made with nourishing ingredients and botanicals like biotin, green tea, nettles, mulberry root and other vitamins that create an intense conditioner. Maximum Lash can be used by anyone, regardless of if you wear contacts or have sensitive eyes.

It’s worth a try, and it’s a lot more affordable then some of the other alternatives, only $48.95 for a three-month supply. Check it out at www.maximumlash.com.

(P.S., we’ve been testing out other lash growth serums so stay tuned!)

Make Up For Ever HD: Makeup that Really Does Last and Last http://azspagirls.com/blog/make-up-for-ever-hd-foundation-that-really-does-last-and-last/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/make-up-for-ever-hd-foundation-that-really-does-last-and-last/#comments Mon, 09 Aug 2010 15:28:25 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3628 Make Up For Ever HD Complexion Travel Kit

Last Friday was one long, hot mess day. It started at 4 a.m. with a flurry of emails, tweets and blog posts. By 8:00, I was kicking the floor fan into high gear so I could primp for a live taping of Sonoran Living at the ABC-15 studios that morning. An hour or so later I was busting out the door where I got slapped with a wave of intense morning heat (oh hello black leather car seats, urhg!). The morning traffic was alive and well with morons (really dude, just because you’re late to work, does that mean you can swerve in and out of lanes at top speed and scare the living crap out of speed-abiding citizens? Sigh.) and by the time I got to the studio, my nerves were tweaked. I lugged my bag of props through the heat and into the cool, calm ABC-15 offices and flopped into a chair in the green room. And waited. And waited. Time was ticking away dangerously close to the time I was supposed to go on so I popped my head into the set. The studio was abuzz with a live audience and the production assistants were busy pumping them up for segment breakaways. Live TV is stressful to say the least and I was scooted into the interview chair within seconds before we went live – sans props. Hello thoroughly drenching nervous wave of perspiration (watch the segment clip).

The day was one sweat rush after another culminating that evening with our Summer Spaaah Series event at Golden Door Spa at The Boulders Resort. Awesome event but tons of work!

Here’s the thing: By the time I got home that night a good 12 hours later, my makeup was still kicking. I kid you not (because I don’t kid about these things – you should know that about me by now). I took a risk that morning and tried out the new Make Up For Ever foundation. I had read somewhere that Julia Roberts used the line on the movie set of Eat, Pray, Love so that’s all it took for me to snag it up on a recent Sephora store binge. Along with the Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation ($40), I bought the HD Complexion Travel Kit ($29, a $40 value) that comes with three of their bestselling products – the HD Microperfecting Primer, HD Elixir and HD Microfinish Powder. I used all four products per the package instructions.

The foundation looked slammin’ on camera and although I did get a little shiny throughout the course of my wacky day, I never had time to stop and powder my nose (here I am somewhere around 6:00 that evening). This stuff held up!

The other worry I had was that I’d wake up the next morning with a craggy landscape of pimples. Here I sit, three days later and no breakouts in sight (knocking on wood now). Make Up For Ever rocks. Simple as that. Get it at a Sephora store near you or at sephora.com. I would recommend trying it in the store so a super enthusiastic Sephora makeup consultant can match you up with the right shade.

Experience Eat, Pray, Love through the Spa http://azspagirls.com/blog/experience-eat-pray-love-through-the-spa/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/experience-eat-pray-love-through-the-spa/#comments Fri, 06 Aug 2010 14:17:29 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3623 Sanctuary Spa Treatment Room

For fans of Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling book, Eat, Pray, Love, the movie premiere on August 13 has been a long time coming. The novel and soon-to-be released film staring Julia Roberts chronicles a woman’s spiritual journey through three exotic locations: Italy, India and Indonesia. And while not many of us have the time or means for a cultural immersion, we can still get a taste of her experience through exotic spa rituals that embrace the counties in her travels. After all, the spa is all about closing your eyes and giving in to your own personal journey, right?

Celebrate the spirit of Eat, Pray, Love with these spa rituals and home spa treatments.

Italy: “Tales About the Pursuit of Pleasure”

At the Spa
Tuscan Journey Facial: A delectable, 60-minute skincare treatment that celebrates the tastes and aromas of the Mediterranean. The facial includes a thorough cleansing, gentle exfoliation and a healing Garlic and Tomato Masque or purifying Tomato Lycopene Masque depending on skin type. The facial culminates with an application of Herbal Eye Contour Cream and either protective Tomato Sun Cream SPF 16 or Tomato Oil-Free Control Gel. Specially priced through August 31 at $65. Get it at Mozaik Skin & Body Studio, Scottsdale, (480) 315-8088.

At Home
Light a candle and wrap yourself in the aromatic pleasure of Pacifica’s Tuscan Blood Orange line. Start with the Body Wash ($16), then layer on the Body Butter ($18) and a dash of Spray Perfume ($22). Available at Sephora.

India: “Tales About the Pursuit of Devotion”

At the Spa
Aromasoul Indian Massage Ritual: Prepare for a brisk, energetic 60-minute massage that calls on the ancient principles of Ayurveda to invigorate your body and spirit. Designed with the body’s daily internal clock in mind, this midday ritual incorporates strong and vigorous strokes that create heat to encourage a profound sense of energy and balance. The therapist uses a blend of Indian essential oils laced with black pepper, cardamom, cedarwood and patchouli to stimulate and uplift the senses. An ideal relief of jet-lag, stress, exhaustion, indigestion, and overall waking up of the body’s energy, $165. Get it at Spa Avania, Hyatt Regency Scottsdale Resort at Gainey Ranch, 480.483.5558.

Home Spa
Devote time to your skin with DDF’s new Advanced Firming Cream ($130) and Advanced Moisture Defense UV Cream SPF 15 ($105), both with turmeric. Known for centuries as a healing spice in India, turmeric is a powerful antioxidant. Get it at Sephora.

Indonesia: “Tales About the Pursuit of Balance”

At the Spa
Luk Pra Kope: Taking inspiration from Balinese and Thai traditions, this 2-hour journey means “to massage with medicinal herbs,” and starts with a foot soak in fresh lime and essential oils. Feet are exfoliated with fine, white Thai clay and fresh lime. The therapist then uses a blend of steamy, organically grown herbs to massage tight muscles, problem areas and energy pathways. Along with Thai massage, the heated compress soothes sore and aching muscles, enhances circulation, reduces joint stiffness and refreshes the skin, $260. Get it at Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, Paradise Valley, 480.948.2100.

Home Spa
Find beauty and balance with The Body Shop’s Spa Wisdom line. Try the Kaffir Lime & Coconut Shower Gel, Monoi Miracle Oil and Lotus & Frangipani and Monoi Body Balm for a home spa treatment. $18 to $24 at The Body Shop.

Beauty-on-the-Go Tips and Picks for Savvy Travelers http://azspagirls.com/blog/beauty-on-the-go-tips-for-savvy-travelers/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/beauty-on-the-go-tips-for-savvy-travelers/#comments Fri, 30 Jul 2010 14:55:21 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3539 3floz.com Hotel Spa Kit

Don’t let the TSA’s travel restrictions cramp your beauty style! Skate through airplane security and travel smart with these tips, tricks and product picks – including a few from our friends at ABC15!

Remember the 3-1-1

To help us remember carry-on restrictions, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has come up with the 3-1-1 rule: 3-oz containers, packed in 1 quart-sized clear bag, 1 bag per passenger. This includes all liquids, gels and aerosols (and yes, toothpaste!).

For a bevy beauty brands in travel-friendly sizes, check out 3FLOZ.com. Created by two friends, the site offers familiar prestige, clinical and natural beauty brands all in carry-on sizes.

Get: Spa on the road with 3FLOZ.com’s In-Hotel Spa Kit (pictured), which includes Ole Henriksen Mico/Mini Starter Kit, Philip B Katira Hair Masque, Dr. Hauschka Eye Mask, Deep Steep Rosemary Mini Travel Set with four body products for $104.

Tip: Daybreak co-anchor Nicole Beyer stays sane on the plane by taking her beauty items as carry-ons. “I make sure to get everything travel size … including hair spray!” For products you absolutely can’t live without, she suggests transferring them into plastic travel bottles. “This way, you never have to worry about the airline losing your bag,” she says.

Don’t Forgo Your Faves

Traveling can be stressful, which can wreaks havoc on your face and skin. Go ahead, take along your favorite beauty products!

Spa Girl must-haves:

  • Olay Total Effects Moisturizer Plus Cooling Hydration (1.7 oz), $22.99 at most drugstores. A light-weight, oil-free, multi-action facial moisturizer with antioxidants to protect against pollutants.
  • Covergirl Lash Blast Waterproof Mascara (.44 oz), $8 at most drugstores. Go ahead and get caught in that summer with this volume-building mascara.
  • Pantene Pro-V Anti-Humidity Hairspray, $3-$4 at most drugstores. This one is worth transferring into a travel bottle or stash the whole bottle in your checked-in bag. Locks out humidity and keeps hair from frizzing out for traveling anywhere outside of the southwest!
  • Pssssst Instant Dry Shampoo (1.7 oz), $2.99 at select drugstores and freemanbeauty.com. An instant hair pick-me-up after a day of traveling.
  • La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water (1.8 oz), $8 at dermstore.com. A mineral-rich blast of hydration for O2-parched skin. Also great for setting mineral powder foundation.
  • California Baby SPF30+ Sunblock Stick (.5 oz), $14.99 at californiababy.com. Whether you’ve got kids in tow or not, this fragrance-free stick keeps you protected on the go. Doubles as a lip balm and moisture stick in a pinch!
  • Smart Girls Who Surf Grab-N-Go Kit, $24 at smartgirlswhosurf.com. A must for beach getaways, this sun-smart kit includes a comb and travel-friendly sizes of Natural SPF 30+ Sunblock, After Sun Soothing Lotion, Care for Hair Sun Protector, two natural glycerin soap, Nnatural SPF 15 Lip Balm.
  • Noah’s Naturals Anti-Aging Travel Kit, $9.50 at select Walmart and Ulta stores. This 3-step, zip-top kit includes a Gentle Cream Cleanser (1 oz) Face Moisturizer (1 oz) and Firming Gel Serum (.31 oz) for healthy skin on the go.

Tips: Evening news anchor Katie Raml’s secret stash is rosewater spritz for “post flight, facial dehydration,” travel hot rollers and an i-Pod speaker doc. “You cannot get ready without great music!” Sonoran Living producer Denise Naughton totes along perfume samplers on her trips to try them out without lugging an entire bottle. “I also keep one in my purse for a quick and refreshing spritz as I’m heading out to happy hour after work,” she says.

Stash in Style

Ziplock bags are truly unexciting when you’re off on a much-anticipated vacay.

Take it up a notch with:

  • Trina Cosmetic Clutch, $35 at select Nordstrom stores. Stash away your carry-on beauty items in this classy clutch after you’ve made it through the security line.
  • Beach n Bag Clear Totes, $49-$69 at beachnbag.com. The smaller totes make the perfect carry-on with plenty of space and interior pockets; plus the frosted clear PVC keeps you from having to dig for days to find your stuff. The larger “LTD” bag, featured in In Style magazine is the ultimate beach bag for road trips or staycations.

Tip: Sonoran Living co-host Andi Barness never leaves town minus her cute black hat, especially when she’s headed to humid climates. “Oh yeah, I also bring sock slippers so I don’t have to walk on the carpet in my room. That grosses me out!”

Spa Girls Fan Picks

AZ Spa Girls Facebook fans and Twitter followers are the best! We hit them up for their favorite travel must-haves and here are just a few we loved too: Avon flavored lip balm, Bumble and bumble Grooming Crème, Olay Daily Facials Cleansing Clothes to remove makeup and refresh skin, Charles Worthington London Smart Fixx Quick Flick Wax Stick to control flyaway hair, Philosophy Color of Grace Coloring Book cosmetics compact and Mallygirl Lightwand Eye Brightener Powder Pencil to freshen up after traveling.

Madonna’s Secret Weapon: Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion http://azspagirls.com/blog/madonnas-secret-weapon-intraceuticals-oxygen-infusion-treatments/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/madonnas-secret-weapon-intraceuticals-oxygen-infusion-treatments/#comments Thu, 29 Jul 2010 13:34:30 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3532 Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion Treatment

Cat’s out of the bag Madge! Madonna’s skincare secret along with dozens of other Hollywood hotties like Eva Longoria, Molly Sims and Justin Timberlake (“It makes my skin look dope.”) is the Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion Treatment and product line – now available at a spa near you.

Developed in Australia, the infusion treatments are performed by a skincare professional using a three-step process to drive the innovative products deep into the skin. They call it hyaluronic layering – a non-invasive process that harnesses the deeply hydrating action of hyaluronic acid to diminish the appearance of fine lines, sagging and lackluster skin. Using an infusion wand, the therapist first uses a cooling, pressurized oxygen system to deliver the vitamin-rich serum. Next, a hydration gel is applied that prevents moisture loss. Finally, a binding cream is applied that provides a layer of intense hydration.

Take-home products enhance the treatment results and come in four lines to target various skin concerns: Rejuvenate (anti-aging), Opulence (brightening), Clarity (healing) and Atoxelene (a wrinkle smoothing injection alternative). Products start at $39 but are highly concentrated so a little goes a long way. Standouts include the Clarity Blemish Repair stick – a healing, redness-reducing wand with a replaceable tip to prevent contamination ($89) and the Opulence Brightening Wand – a soft brush tip that delivers a dose of luminosity to patchy or uneven skin tone ($89).

The Intraceuticals Oxygen Infusion treatment and skincare line is available at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Glow Med Spa in Glendale and Aji Spa at the Sheraton Wild Horse Horse Pass Resort in Chandler. For additional locations or to learn more about Intraceuticals treatments and products, visit intraceuticals.com.

Maximizing Your Spa Dollars http://azspagirls.com/blog/maximizing-your-spa-dollars/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/maximizing-your-spa-dollars/#comments Sat, 24 Jul 2010 13:00:00 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=10 Post image for Maximizing Your Spa Dollars

How do you save money at the spa in this not-so-pretty economy? It can be done. And with the gloomy financial clouds hanging thick and heavy over our heads, we think it’s even more reason to give yourself a spa day out. Here are our tried-and-true tips for making the most of your spa bucks.

Do your homework. Before you book an appointment, call around and ask about new client discounts, seasonal offers and special promotions. Spas and salons don’t always advertise their specials or post them to their websites. Also, many resort spas offer special rates for locals, especially during the off-season summer months, while others offer mid-week specials and lowered weekday rates. It never hurts to ask!

Be a know-it-all. Scan your local newspaper, magazines and the internet for grand opening specials, product sales and special deals. And not to toot our own horn but keep an eye on our Spa and Salon Specials page for an ever-changing lineup of sweet coupons and offers. Also, check out our Facebook Events Calendar for local spa openings and beauty events. Toot toot!

Go back to school. Arizona is hopping with little-known gems that house the next up-and-coming beauty professionals. By offering discounted services to the public, beauty and massage school students get hands-on experience while you save big on services. Think of it as doing your part in training the future spa therapists of the world! More on Valley beauty schools.

Think ahead. If you tend to visit your favorite salon or spa regularly for skincare treatments or massage, ask about discounts for pre-purchasing a series of services. As an example, many spas offer discounts if you purchase a series of microdermabrasion, peel or laser treatments. Not only do you save money but the results from your treatments tend to be more lasting and effective.

Supersize it. If you plan to indulge in more than one treatment, check the menu for packages. By opting for a package rather than a la carte treatments, you’ll usually save at least the cost of the gratuity if not more.

Join the club. Massage clubs are successful for a reason: They offer their members amazing rates and keep them on track with regular, healthful massage. Many day spas and med spas also offer memberships. National chains like Massage Envy even honor your membership when you’re on the road. Next time you visit your favorite beauty or wellness joint, ask if they offer memberships. Remember, there are no stupid questions!

Get on the list. Visit the websites of your favorite spas and salons and if they have a newsletter sign-up form, go for it. As a subscriber, you’ll be notified of special offers, sales and events. And if you’re not signed up for the AZSpaGirls eblast, we would highly recommend it. We round up exclusive offers every other month or so and you won’t want to miss them! Sign up here.

Stay the day. Even though resort and club spa services are pricey, most come padded with a full day’s use of the amenities. Forking out the few extra bucks for a resort spa massage or facial isn’t so bad when you get a full day of swimming, steaming, lounging and fitness classes at no extra cost.

Make it last. Extend your spa experience with a gift for yourself from the boutique. Pick up a recommended skincare product or a tiny vile of essential oil. All you need is that little something to keep the good vibes from your spa day rolling long after you’ve left.

Please Hold! Spa Girls Picks for Best Hair Sprays http://azspagirls.com/blog/please-hold-spa-girls-picks-for-best-hair-sprays/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/please-hold-spa-girls-picks-for-best-hair-sprays/#comments Fri, 23 Jul 2010 11:00:00 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=331 Moroccan Oil Hairspray

There’s nothing worse than spending hours poofing and primping your hair only to have your efforts fall flat the minute you head out the door. So what’s the fairest hair spray of them all? We put our heads together to come up with our tried-and-true faves. Here’s our hit list of best hair sprays.

Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray, $20, moroccanoil.com. This is our new crush. I was introduced to the heavenly smelling, natural hold hair spray by my stylist Jackie at Steven Paul Salon. Bless her and bless Moroccan Oil for developing the yummiest aroma we’ve ever sniffed. Find it at salons throughout the Valley.

Kerastase Double Force Controle Ultime, $36, kerastase-usa.com. We like this one for teased-up poofs and dramatic up-do’s because of the extra strength hold that builds with each coat. It’s pricey but the kicker is that the formula contains a protective UV shield to prevent sun and pollution damage.

Profound Beauty Working Spray, $27, profoundbeauty.com. We love this one for serious styling. One coat helps daytime waves stay strong with a lightweight formula that gives a clean finish without the stick. But for big sexy curls, spray sections as you work the curling iron and use your fingers to loosen loops. Curls last but don’t look set and crunchy.

L’Oreal Paris Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold with UV Filter for Color Treated Hair, $24, lorealparisusa.com. Crowned as one of the best hair sprays by Allure, Redbook and Self magazines, this hair-molding wonder gives hair a shiny finish while protecting it from humidity. Thanks to micro-diffusion technology, the spray comes out in a fine mist and hair stays put ’til the sun comes up (and then some)! Also available in Extra Strong Hold and Strong Hold formulations.

Bumble and bumble Classic Hairspray, $21, bumbleandbumble.com. A modern twist on the trusty aerosol, this great-smelling spray is dosed with sheen boosters and hair repairing proteins. The formula provides a medium, workable hold that easily brushes out before your head hits the pillow at night.

TIGI Bed Head Masterpiece Massive Shine Hairspray, $18, drugstore.com. We can’t get enough of this spray’s built-in gloss that adds shine, fights dryness and boosts thickness. The medium hold formula lasts from morning until night and smells like berry.

Phyto Spray Laque Hair Spray, $18, sephora.com. When your hair needs to breath but still stay put, this botanical spray does the job with silk proteins that banish brittleness and soothe dryness. Gives relaxed daytime styles a light hold and is completely free of parabens, sulfates, petroleum-based chemicals and synthetic dyes.

Got 2b Styltini After Hours 24 Hour Laminating Shine Hairspray, $6.29, drugstore.com. Easy on the pocketbook, this spray gives style va-va voom with flexible hold that won’t weigh hair down. Go sheer with one coat or layer on for extra staying power.

Hopscotch Kids Nail Polishes for the Spa Girl in Training http://azspagirls.com/blog/hopscotch-kids-nail-polishes-for-the-spa-girl-in-training/ http://azspagirls.com/blog/hopscotch-kids-nail-polishes-for-the-spa-girl-in-training/#comments Mon, 19 Jul 2010 16:23:41 +0000 azspagirl http://azspagirls.com/?p=3472 Non Toxic Nail Polish for Kids

My 3-year-old niece is the cutest little nugget to ever walk the earth and on the rare occasions we get to spend one-on-one time together, it always involves me breaking out my nail polish collection. She’s actually pretty good at sitting still while I paint her teeny tiny toenails. Her fingernails are a little more challenging as any of you with kids know – wet nails tend to end up in their mouths, their hair, on your furniture. But it’s darn good fun and during our last time together, I had a new product for us to test out. I tried to get a proper review out of her but she didn’t have much to say other than picking out the color (the kid loves pink and I love that) so I’ll have to do the honors.

Created by a Phoenix mom of four, Hopscotch Kids is a kid-centic cosmetic line that features water-based nail polishes void of any nasty chemicals, heavy metals or noxious smells. The polishes – called Water Colors – come in vibrate hues that inspire creativity with fun names like “Ink a Bink Bottle of Ink” blue and “Bubble Gum, Bubble Gum in a Dish” pink. They only require one coat for a dash of color and dry to the touch in no time. No base coat necessary – the non-toxic colorants won’t yellow nails.

The polish remover is acetone-free and comes in a spill-proof bottle. We thought it worked pretty fast when we smeared one of her nails and decided on a re-do. Ingredients such as plant-based alcohol, fatty acids and organic butter actually nourish tiny nails.

Hopskotch Kids Water Colors are $12.99 each and also come in value twin and party packs. Birthday girls can celebrate her big day with friends with the Birthday Pack, which comes with eight Water Colors, polish remover and nail buffer packaged in a tin pail ($114.99).

Overall, we gave the product two tiny thumbs up and then celebrated our first review together with a juice break.

Hop on over to HopscotchKids.com to get your spa-girl-in-training in the spirit and give a shout out of support to our local mom inventors!
