If you’re craving a lazy spa day with the girls but your purse strings are as a tight as your skinniest skinny jeans, there is still hope! All you need is a few dozen eggs, some mix-ins from your kitchen, a splash of creativity and a heap of feel-good vibes from your besties.
Set the date, shoot out an email to your girlfriends (don’t be afraid to ask for their help!) and prepare for some hang time—spa style!
Yolks
First, the good, gooey stuff. There’s no better way to kick off a home spa day than with egg on your face—an egg facial mask, that is—and with a little tweaking, you can have one ready for every skin type.
Have your beauty treatments partially made ahead of time in glass bowls. Set the bowls along your kitchen counter with index cards in front of each treatment so your guests know which is right for them. If your kitchen space is limited, set up treatment stations in bathrooms. Be sure to have plenty of washcloths, towels, tissues and makeup remover wipes handy. Have a handful of inexpensive 1-inch natural paint brushes from your local hardware store on hand for mask application.
Treatments to make:
Egg white tightening mask: This one’s a cinch and brings out the glow in all skin types. Start with three eggs (you can add more as necessary). Separate whites from the yolks in two bowls. Set the yolks aside and whisk the egg whites until fluffy. Apply the egg whites to a clean face with a brush. Let the mask dry completely. Livestrong offers this nifty tip: cover congested areas like the chin and nose with a tissue and once the mask dries, peel the tissue back to draw out blackheads and impurities.
Hydrating egg yolk mask: This one is great for dry, parched skin. Mix your three egg yolks with about three teaspoons of olive oil and three mushed up, ripe bananas. Paint on clean skin and leave on for about 15 minutes.
Hold-the-yolk oatmeal mask: This one’s for your non-egg-lovin’ friends and soothes and hydrates all skin types. Mix a 1/2 cup of finely ground oats with a 1/4 cup of plain Greek yogurt and a few teaspoons honey. Dab the pasty mixture onto clean skin and allow to draw for about 15 minutes.
After each mask, have the girls rinse and follow with a moisturizer. You can have an inexpensive, basic moisturizer or sunscreen on hand or have your guests bring along their favorites (Cetaphil Daily Hydrating Lotion is a safe bet for most skin types).

Soaks
Ever wonder why you get your best ideas in the shower? Standing under running water (or soaking in a tub) enhances relaxation, distracts the mind and triggers the release of dopamine. Not to get all scientific on you but this release also leads to a heap of creativity (read why on Buffer). That said, if you have a whirlpool or Jacuzzi, the party is at your house.
Crank up the bubbles and set the vibe with hot tub aromatherapy mood crystals. Keep your guests comfy with spa pillows. Opt for energizing tropical or citrus scents to help spark insights for your conversation. If your complex or community has a hot tub or pool, move the party to the pool after your treatments. And if no bubbling water is within your grasp, an inflatable baby pool flanked by lawn chairs in the backyard will do the trick for a shared foot soak and girl talk.
Bites
The key here is relaxation, so don’t stress yourself out by going overboard on the spread. Keep your fixin’s light and easy with a mix of homemade and store-bought finger foods. Add an eco-spa touch to your decor with sustainably produced serving plates made from fallen leaves. Cleanup is easy because they’re disposable (and pretty).
Food to fix:
- Cucumber salsa (so good, trust us!)
- Roasted red pepper hummus
- Whole wheat pita chips
- Mini skewered cherry tomatoes and feta cheese chunks drizzled with olive oil
- Dark chocolate trail mix energy bites (only four ingredients, woot!)
- Spa Girl Cucumber Cocktails over ice with a splash of lime juice (get 15% off your order when you sign up for their email list).
Serve with strawberry and mint spa water, a selection of English tea sachets and iced Prosecco. For the spa water, thinly slice a handful of fresh strawberries and place in a pitcher along with a dozen or so roughly torn fresh mint leaves. Fill the pitcher with spring water. Voilà.
Bits
Atmosphere—the final frontier! The final components to any memorable home spa day is a vibe-setting soundscape and a take-home memento of your day of beauty and banter. Keep the mood on pace with upbeat loungy tunes that create an energetic atmosphere without being distracting. If the conversation is lagging, pop a chick flick in your DVD player to lighten the mood. Before your guests take off, have them pull a rock out of a “secret” pouch (so they can’t see which one they are getting). You can pick up mixed natural tumbled rocks or etched faith stones. Either way, your guests will leave with a little something to remember the day.
