Meet higher education professional and Mrs. Scottsdale 2019 Dr. Carie Powers and find out her beauty and wellness secrets.
Radiating beauty both inside and out, Dr. Carie Powers is a loving wife, mom of two, and a highly focused educational professional. She’s also a hot yoga practitioner and teacher. In 2019, she represented the city of Scottsdale in the Mrs. Arizona America Pageant. So of course, we had to know, what’s in your beauty bag Dr. Carie Powers?
Here, she shares her secrets for staying fit, balanced and radiant.
What do you do professionally?
I am a personally involved leader working with Adtalem Global Education assisting their subsidiary, Chamberlain University in successful implementation of growth strategies. I have responsibility for the rollout of new (and current) campus enrollment in the western United States.
What has your role as Mrs. Scottsdale meant to you?
I’m honored and grateful to have represented Scottsdale in the 2019 Mrs. Arizona America Pageant. That positive experience allowed me to interact within the local community with concepts and ideas around organizational wellness. Having the opportunity to inspire and motivate those I came in contact with using the model of wellness in schools with a focus on “whole child” education was rewarding.
Can you tell us about your boys?
Of course! Taven is 16 and will be a sophomore at Notre Dame Preparatory. Gifted in the arts and multimedia, Taven entertains the family with piano “concerts” that echo through the house and takes 4k drone videos that parallel that of a Hollywood producer. Cove, age 6, is the engineer. He’s a little Einstein-in-the-making interested in how things work and keeps busy envisioning a better version of today’s scientific achievements.
How do you define beauty?
While beauty can be perceived at the surface level, I prefer to define it as the intersection of body, mind, spirit and soul. Think of an “X” with the four points representing each of these. Where the “X” intersects, draw a heart. That is where beauty lives . . . in the heart. The heart incorporates qualities from each of these important human attributes. One of my favorite quotes is from meditation coach, Laura Silva, which states:
“Has anyone ever told you that you have a beautiful mind?”
That exemplifies my belief of a deeper recognition of beauty.
What are your top 3 beauty must-haves?
My top 3 are:
- Egyptian Magic All Purpose Skin Cream
Rub a small amount until it takes the form of an oil and apply on clean bare face, neck, hands and cuticles in the evening. I love how it instantly transforms my dull skin as a result of the dry desert heat to radiant, soft, glowing skin! It’s truly magical! - PCA Skin ExLinea Peptide Smoothing Serum
This is just like Botox without the needles! It works to smooth wrinkles and firm lines around the eyes, forehead and mouth. I purchase this at my local dermatologist, Affiliated Dermatology. - CVS Nighttime Whitening Gel
One of the things I often receive compliments on is my bright smile. The CVS Nighttime Whitening Gel is the secret. This product is gentle with no added sensitivity so I can use nightly. Simply apply after brushing and flossing. Bonus tip: Use a Crest Glamorous White or Lumineux whitening strip every 2 weeks for added whiteness.
What beauty items do you never leave home without?
I never leave home without a travel size perfume. My current favorite is Lancome’s Idole Le Parfum rollerball. I really like this fresh and flirty scent. I was walking in the grocery store and a gentleman stopped me to ask what perfume I was wearing. It was Lancome’s Idole and he literally typed the beauty brand and fragrance name into his phone to order for his wife!
What’s your all-time favorite spa treatment or salon indulgence?
For a local indulgence, I like The Spa at Camelback Inn’s Signature Body Wrap using Vitamin C and the Spa’s signature scrub. You’ll end up glowing on the other side! I love the smell of orange blossoms and the citrus conditioner they massage into the hair and scalp is delightful.
Do you have any DIY spa treatments that you do at home?
I have an affordable at-home microdermabrasion system that is easy for beginners yet yields professional results. The Trophy Skin MicrodermMD system (you can read our review here) comes with diamond, extraction, and infusion tips to help regenerate skin cells and improve radiance! There is also a sensitive skin mode that is relaxes the intensity of the wand. This is so great for my busy schedule as it saves me from having to make recurring facial appointments.
What do you do to stay in shape?
Hot yoga. I enjoy everything from the history to the powerful benefits of yoga. The various stretches and poses in a heated room, reduce stress and help to increase overall health and wellbeing. I practice Bikram as my primary form of yoga which incorporates 26 poses and numerous breathing exercises, as well as the Sumit sequence created by Sumit Banerjee.
How do you relax?
Meditation. Check out Soul of EverLe. This spiritual wellness site by signer songwriter Leann Rimes has the most beautiful mediations and chants resonating high vibrational frequencies as well as insightful blog entries. Winding down with a good book and a glass of wine is relaxing. I would also add that home renovation shows are my ultimate kryptonite.
